Liner Notes: From its very beginning, this innovative project showcases the dramatic new landscape for creating and distributing music. The lead track is from “post-punk laptop rapper” MC Lars, whose 2006 hit, “Download this Song,” celebrates the disruptive revolution that has transformed the music industry.
The song itself is the product of two musicians who had never met except online. Working in a transatlantic collaboration, lyricist Alan Lastufka, (based near Chicago, Illinois) and composer Tom Milsom, (based near London, England) joined to complete “Cant,” a song that Lastufka had started writing a decade earlier. With Milsom’s vocals and production, the song was promoted through YouTube and released in 2009 both on disk and iTunes.
On YouTube, the video for “Can’t” has been viewed more than half a million times and covered by musicians using everything from simple ukulele strums to sophisticated multi-track recording software.
