I wrote a lot growing up. I wrote poems and short stories and crappy novels. Because writing was the one hobby I had that most of my aunts and uncles knew about, I got a lot of journals and decorative notebooks for birthdays and Christmases. I never used any of them. I stuck to lose leaf lined paper.
I was afraid to use the fancy journals! Blank notebooks, empty reams of typewriter paper – these are things of inspiration. But add just a single mark to the first page, and that inspiration starts to fade – the promise of what that journal could have become has been fulfilled.
I probably sound crazy now.
Anyway, I feel the same way today about new websites. So full of potential. So inspiring, a new blog. Then it gets filled up with posts. The potential is gone. It has become what it’s going to become, and usually that’s just an okay collection of posts. Maybe a few good articles that get passed around. Occasionally a comment or two that makes me stop and reconsider one long-held opinion or another. But after a couple of mediocre posts, I find myself neglecting my blog.
Recently my friend, author and documentary filmmaker Michael W. Dean, shut down two of his older blogs and started a new third blog. He shrugged while we were talking about his sites and said “it’s all just chalk on the sidewalk, man”. Wait.. You mean none of this is permanent? You mean a decent rain or a neighbor kid with a Super Soaker can wash this all away?
Talk about liberating.
This blog’s destiny might already be fulfilled with blog posts and old project announcements, but who cares? I can delete past posts that I no longer like. I can edit my grammar mistakes or changed opinions. I don’t have to throw away the whole notebook just because the first page has been used.
With that in mind, I start BEDA (Blog Every Day in April). I’m not sure which topics I’ll be writing about. In ’09 I did BEDA successfully. In ’10 I did VEDA (Vlog Every Day…) successfully, not missing a single day. So I look forward to BEDA’ing again this year.
Are you participating in BEDA this year? If so, what’s your first post about today?
