Social Life, With Friends is a 2009 short kinetic typography film I designed and directed. It animates the poem “Social Life, With Friends” written and read by Kenneth Koch.

The short film was released on YouTube and was a finalist for the Guggenheim Play exhibit.

Production

Social Life, With Friends was designed in Adobe Illustrator and animated in Adobe AfterEffects to illustrate the reading of Kenneth Koch’s poem. Amy Krouse Rosenthal recorded Koch reading his poem for an audio zine she edited. Her recording of his reading was used for my kinetic typography.

Guggenheim Play Exhibit

The original YouTube upload of Social Life, With Friends now has over 400,000 views and was shortlisted for the Guggenheim Museum’s Play exhibit, a 2010 installation celebrating the finest in online video. While the video did not make the final 25 that were showcased on display, it was still an honor to be considered as a finalist.

4K UHD Restoration

When originally rendered for online streaming, Social Life, With Friends was released at a resolution of 360p. At the time, this was the recommended format for YouTube videos, but it is a low quality picture when compared to standards just ten years later.

In December 2017, I went back to the original vector elements to completely restore Social Life, With Friends at a resolution of 2160p. The original vector files were re-rendered in native 2160p. All of the original AfterEffects animation files were preserved and were re-rendered for a higher quality picture. I also restored and remastered the audio from the original low-fi recording for the new 4k restoration.
